Well, for one thing, it's a matter of good policy, not to criticize the "commander in chief" as a serving general. For another thing, criticizing the "commander in chief" while serving could lead to a court martial and loss of benefits...
So, I wouldn't actually say these generals are sacrificing anything by throwing barbs; they still get their pensions.
By the way: have a link to back up your statement?

Good question...who knows if the criticism of the Iraq war is because they were forced to retire due to something dishonorable or if they are genuine...no will ever know which makes this a dead subject.

Because they love our country and our troops. And having been in the war zone, they know first hand how wrong Bush is. They have to retire so Bush and his war mongers can't ruin their lives once they retire. They also know first hand how dirty Bush is to those who DARE disagree with him. Our president suffers from hubris which is leading to our ruin, not his. Bush and Cheney should be impeached, convicted and removed from office.

There is the problem of the Bush-league downsizing and outsourcing of the military, particularly under Donald Rumsfeld. Not to mention misguided unecessary wars that kill soldiers and wear the machinery of war.
