You could argue that the Cold War was an inevitable result of the conclusion of WWII, with a powerful capitalist (USA) and a communist state (USSR) both victorious over the Axis.
The USA and NATO on one side, the USSR and Warsaw Pact (and to an extent, China) on the other. Plus, many relutctant or oportunistic allies, puppets, and proxies on both sides.
The USSR underwent an internal upheaval and change of government that is generally marked as the end of the Cold War. The USA, then, 'won' by default.

Stalin's monumental distrust led to the Cold War.
"Fought" is a term for wars that are hot and not cold, although there were 'proxy' wars between the two antoganists (US and USSR). The most notable 'proxy' wars were Korea, Vietnam, Yom Kipur, Afhaganistan, among others.
The US won as the USSR crumbled under its own weight in the late 80's....there's only one super power left in the world.

The Cold war was not really a 'war' is was a period of high nuclear tension between the U.S. and the then Soviet Union, it began shortly after WW2, the U.S and Soviets once allies began to mistrust one another and with the new technology of nuclear weapons, we almost went to war.
