I believe it's an illusion. Try moving your knees forward and back (alternating) like we used to do in hula, and your hips will move :-) I'm not sure what hip rolling is, so I'm not sure if the type of movement I'm suggesting will help you, but good luck!

It *is* an illusion, like someone wrote. Hip motion comes from your knees and ankles. Bend your left knee and settle your weight into the right hip. Then straighten your left leg so that both legs are straight for a split second and then bend your right knee and settle the weight in your left hip. Keep switching back and forth. You will see your hips rotate with your knees and your ankles. Once you get the hang of this, try and keep your top as quiet as possible. Isolate your upper body from your base. And as your knees bend and straighten, instead of rising and falling, take the motion into your hips so that you move more backwards and forwards. It will start to look like just your hips are moving.

Practice. If you have a full length mirror, stand in front of it and practice. Put on some music and just have fun. i bet it will help if you put your hands on your hips. Also, try to stay a little soft in the knees, as that usually helps. Good luck!

a good way to learn is to hold your abdominal muscles tight together(but breathe) and keep your pelvis down and concentrate and try one hip at a time...roll it or hip hike it...like up up up...and then try it with a book or something to balance on yur head to make sure your body is in alignment and balanced and try it again and again...you will eventually get it and catch on...but keep your upper body still...

you need to stand tall, lift your upper body and take a deep breathe in. you can then keep this upper part of your body up and circle your hips.
