Actually, they're technically the 7th major league team in Washington. The first 6:
1. Washington Statesmen, American Association, 1884: team folded
2. Washington Nationals, Union Association, 1884: league folded
3. Washington Senators, National League, 1886-89: team folded
4. Washington Senators, AA 1891, NL 1892-99: team eliminated when the league contracted from 12 to 8 teams
5. Washington Senators/Nationals, American League, 1901-60: moved and became the Minnesota Twins
6. Washington Senators, AL, 1961-71: moved, became the Texas Rangers

The original Senators relo'd to Minnesota after the 1960 season, and was renamed as the Twins.
A second Senators franchise was installed in the 1961 American League expansion, along with the Los Angeles Angels. The second Senators bailed out after the 1971 season (which ended with a forfeit, as fans got out of control) to Arlington, Texas, and became the Rangers.

They became the the Minnesota Twins (1961), and the Texas Rangers (1971).
"First in war, first in peace, last in the American League", was what was frequently said of them.
