David Bauder, AP Television Writer stated that there are 2.5 million less Television viewers than there was last year at this time. Why do you think the numbers have dropped?

This is not about prime time but it is about net work television. And people I have my own opinion. I just asked to see what the general concensus was.
I quit watching television in the 90's.

To re-phrase my question:
"Why do you think there are 2.5 million less network television viewers this year than last year at this time?"

The quality of the shows have declined. There was once a song that stated that "Video killed the radio star". Reality shows have killed the T.V. star!

I don't think that people have time for T.V. anymore. With the advent of Netflix and Blockbuster delivering movies in the mail and the option to watch old T.V. shows on the Internet, ipods, and even on their cell phones people no longer schedule their life around the "boob tube". I remember a time when people used to rush home from work to catch the latest episode of Sienfeld and Friends because they knew that it may be a while before they would be able to see it as a re-run. Now you don't have to worry about that anymore because not only can you watch a missed show on-line anytime you want but the T.V. channels themselves repeat a show a billion a week just to be sure you get a chance to see it. Take all of this and add TIVO to the mix and now you have a recipe for relaxed T.V. viewing without the pressure hence fewer viewers.

If I remember correctly the number was 2.5 million less viewers during prime time. Here are my thoughts

1) There are no new shows that capture a wide audience

2) More people are out during primetime because of later sunsets (daylight savings)

3) Shows that were "must see" have lost A LOT of momentum. examples: 24 & Lost

4) More networks are allowing viewing of the show online and PVRs like Tivo are enabled viewrs to watch at their own convenience and not during "prime time"

Actually, the question should be worded, do you THINK, because this isn't fact. Really, it's just the source of TV and the Neilson Media Research can't calculate the Internet viewers, DVR viewers that watch it 24 hours after the recording, and downloaders. Now, I believe the number is, 17% of Americans own a DVR...so that's where the 2.5million went. That is also why there is the FAST NATIONAL RATINGS, and then the FINALS. (finals have configured MOST of the viewers)

Probably a few different factors - less quality programming, more people using their DVRs/Tivos instead of watching live TV, On-Demand entertainment on TV and via the Internet.

We watch what we want, when we want, now more than ever before. And more than that, we don't watch what we don't want to watch - there is no longer a need to sit through a show we hate because there's "nothing else on"...

I don't think there is enough quality programming out there on prime-time...it's as if the networks rush out the crap and push it on the tube.

The Internet is also a BIG factor. More interesting stuff going on in here and if people want to check out something different, they'll go on to YouTube or other digital video sources.

Saw that in yahoo didn't you? I guess because the shows in tv are just repeating. There are also lots of other activites that are better than watching TV, such as using the computer, sports, technology also has evolved. If you ask yourself you'll realize that there are lots of other things to do than watch tv compared last year and the years before. : )

Just as the article said....DVR. I have it and rarely watch anything at the aired time. Often save it and watch it over the weekend...sometimes because I am too busy.

Personally for me, I've been meditating, spending time with my daughter and reading books. I got tired of all the crap on tv.
