Ugh! Everyone at my school says, "That's retarded!" or "That's gay!", which is so annoying because they use it in mean ways. Retarded means you are learning disabled or actually have a medical condition in your brain.... it doesn't mean you're just stupid! Do you hear people do this? What's a way to get them to stop without sounding adultish?

Mentally retarded does not mean learning disabled or a brain medical condition. It means of low intelligence and implies slowness in learning. There are different degrees.

I hear both phrases (from the younger set!) a lot. I think they're both terrible. Any advice I give you however will definitely sound adultish! My retort to a 12 year old family member who uses "That's gay" is "Not that there's anything wrong with that!" But see, that's an 'adultish' response too. It's from Seinfeld.

Good for you for knowing there's something wrong with both phrases. And good for you for not feeling the pressure to use them yourself.

I have actually heard people say those kinds of things too. I'm not sure why, but they very well could be using it in a bad way that's out of context.

I believe that the word retard or retarted means to hold back or something similar. Here are some definitions from Google. http://www.google.com/search?q=define%3A+retard&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

Also, for the "That's gay!" type of thing, I've heard that and responded to it with something like, "How could that be homosexual?"

People will continue to be people and the best way to try to put an end to this would to either try and ignore it or speak up and tell them you think that's immature or something.

the kids do the same thing at my school...
I am strongly against people saying things like "thats retarded" because my Aunt has downsyndrome, so she is actually mentally retarded...

I do have to say though, that i have called something gay...
I personally dont have an opinion on gay people, and i don't think that anything is wrong with being gay...
but in a way, when i may say, thats gay or something, i don't really mean it liek that...in my mind, in a way, they are two different words...do you kind of get what i am saying?

The first poster is right. Just be glad you have a level of maturity beyond your years, and let the others continue to show their ingnorance.

just don't say it yourself, and leave others be as they are.
