It has its origins in African magical folklore and some how got changed to voodoo.Possibly Haiti or Jamaica,with links to baron Samaldi.Sorry i seem a bit vague,but it is a little hard to answer,due to unwritten history.There is also a link to a range of Rockies that goes across the USA called the hoodoo.

In our vernacular in Louisiana, It's used a number of ways. A spirit. A familiar. An animal or person created by a voodoo priestess to carry out a certain task. A possessed person.
