Influence on writers is better than "effect" but I still don't get the part about effect on poetry.

I disagree with the person who said Shakespeare didn't have an impact on the language itself, but if you're going to agree with her/him, do so wholeheartedly. He influenced the development or he made an impact on the language, but didn't make an impact on the development. And "made an impact" is three score and ten times better than "had an impact".
