If my router (Netgear) is hooked up to my computer, my computer will not recognize the modem(Westell). I think this is because the IP addresses of the two both start with 192.168.1...and the router thinks everything is addressed to it and doesn't send anything through the modem. How do I change the IP address for my router? The address 192.168.1.1 won't work without the router hooked up, but the internet doesn't work if the router is. I really appreciate any help, thanks.

Thanks to both of you for the quick response. My question now is how do I change my router's IP address without being online?

Im not really clear how you are connecting everything because if you connect your computer to the router then you should connect the modem to the routers WAN (Internet) Port and not to your computer also.

This is how it should be connected, Im assuming you have DSL and not cable internet.

-Cable from the Phone Line Wall Socket to the Modem
-Ethernet Cable from the modem to the Routers WAN (Internet) Port
-Ethernet cable from the Routers Ethernet Port #1 to the computers ethernet port

After you have setup these connections you should beable to open a web browser and type in the routers IP address (192.168.1.1) and log into the router.

Then you will need to setup the router to connect to your modem and your ISP. Find the WAN section of your routers settings and select PPPOE as your connection type. Then put in your ISP Username and password in the appropriate fields and save the settings.

Reboot the modem and router and that should do it.....

I ran into this problem with a Linksys router. What you have to do, is Factory Reset your Netgear router. (See your router directions.)

Boot it up, and plug your computer into it. LEAVE THE WESTELL MODEM UN-PLUGGED.

Then you need to change the IP address of the Netgear, to 192.168.2.1 or something different. What this dose is change the host IP address, to something else. Save, and reboot the Netgear.

At this point you are ready to go, Turn everything off, then turn them off in this order.
1. Westel Modem (Wait until all lights are sold.)
2. Netgear Router. (Watch the lights and wait in thongs are in ready mode.)
3. boot your computer, and start surfing.

Good Luck.

PS This was being on the phone for 4 hours with both Verizon, and Linksys, and finally figured it out on my own. (I work on computers for a living, and it threw me for a loop.)

Windows - Computer connected directly to the modem

Get to a command prompt. (START, run, cmd).

Type "ipconfig /release" (without the quotes, on the command line by itself).
Type "ipconfig /renew" (without the quotes, on the command line by itself).

Windows (second option) - Computer connected directly to the modem

Get to a command prompt. (START, run, cmd).
Type "ipconfig /release" (without the quotes).
Shut down computer.
Turn off computer.
Turn off all ethernet hubs/switches.
Turn off cable/DSL modem.
Leave off overnight.
Turn everything back on.
Network with Router

Log into the router's admin console. (Often http://192.168.1.1/)
Release the IP address. (Method varies by router manufacturer)
Turn off router, ethernet hubs/switches, and the cable/DSL modem.
Leave off overnight.
Turn everything back on.

ok so i manged to get all the pertanant information from what you have but barly.
your westell needs to be bridged then you need to set up your router most likely pppoe (most dls providers use pppoe) you wont need to change any settings on your computer beause you will be able to get online with the router pluged in.
