Perfect growing conditions.
They have a constant supply of organic fertilizer, from the decaying plant material around them. They have an abundance of moisture...daily rain and moisture coming from that which the plants themselves give off (much like a person sweating), constant humidity, and abundant sunlight.

....and they are in competition with one another. Trees growing close together grow up, not out. In an effort to get to sunlight they have to stretch up, not out where they would get shaded out.
