We are looking for a good straight play (non-musical) for our high school that is fun to work on, has a large cast, and is relatively well-known / has a big name. Thank you!

Of course, Shakespearean plays are very well known and usually have large casts... and they can be a lot of fun to do. Romeo & Juliet has so many great scenes, and can be fun and challenging (as long as you have enough time to safely choreograph and learn the fight scenes).
Sometimes the more well known plays arent always the best. I have been in theater for over 20 years now, and some of my favorites arent the most well known.
I would suggest looking at Samuel French's web site (http://www.samuelfrench.com/store/). They have a search ability to look up plays by the size of the cast you are looking for, and it will break down how many men and women are in the cast, as well as a synopsis of the story. You can also purchase pre-printed posters for your show with enough room to add your shows specifics. You can also look for royalty and non-royalty plays, order the scripts, and set up any fee payments through them right there on the website.
Good luck with your search and your show!

A lot of the older movies done in the 40's and so on started off as stage plays. Look at Bogart, he did a play called the Petrified Forest and then did it again on screen. Good stuff!!!
Seven Year Itch was also a stage play and then Marlyn Monroe stared in the screen version. The older stuff may be easier to do for high school, back in those day modesty was actually valued.

If you can do Shakespeare Romeo is the play that is the best known... its really tough because most well known acting pieces are musicals... good luck!!
If you know of any just choose that even if it's not the most well-known play around... many people don't know any plays at all!

How large?

Man Who Came to Dinner, Canterbury Tales, Animal Farm, Flea in Her Ear, Great Expectations, Jungle Book

Here's a list of some large cast (12 or more) plays:

The Crucible. It's depressing, but I had fun when I did it.
