from wikipedia the formula for the volme of a cylinder is:
v= pi*r^2*h
you are given d the diameter and h the height. the formula for the diamiter of a circle is 2*pi*r=d
so r = d/(2*pi)
plug and chug

I think it comes out to be about 554.4 Inch^3

this works because pi*r^2 is the cross sectional area of the cilynder. When you multiply the cross sectional area by the height you get the volume.

V = π r² h
V = π x 12² x 38 in³
V = 1742 in³ (to nearest whole number)
