According to my doctor, that would fall under "old wives tale." The baby's heart rate depends on how active they are at the time. If the baby is sleeping, heart rate will be lower, awake and it will be higher.

That said, there are an awful lot of people who've used heart rate as a gender predictor and have been right (pre-ultrasounds my mom's doc guessed all three of her kids correctly).

I used to believe this was just an old wives tale - however - as a labor & delivery nurse, I have seen firsthand that there is DEFINITELY a trend that boys have slower heart rates while girls are faster. And there are some scientific studies that have been done that shows that newborn boys on average have a slower heart rate than girls, and by age 2 a boy's pulse is nearer to an adult rate (80-100) than a girl's.

It's not reliable enough to use it consistantly in predicting the gender, but like I said, generally it works out that way! :)

Hey,
That is just a very old wives tale!
I had a baby boy and his heartbeat was always around 155-160.
Good luck!
Most of the old wives tales arn't true either.
Because if they were I should have been pregnant with a girl and he was a boy haha!
Even by the chinese luna calendar they said he was a girl but I was ment to be a boy go figure lol!

In the case of my three children, my girls heartbeats were always higher. I have one boy (heartbeat normallly was around 135) and two girls (heartbeats normally around 155). So it was true in my case! But, I've heard of many many people who said this does not work AT ALL! Have fun with the many wives tales and wait till you can get a sono to tell the gender, or wait till Baby decides to make an appearance. Thats the only sure way to tell! Best of luck!

50/50 chance it's true, just like flipping a coin. In early pregnancy the heart rate is fast anyway, so the most "accurate" way to tell is if the heart rate goes up or down in late pregnancy. Other than that an ultrasound or amniocentesis is the only way to tell.

In lots of cases, yes. Usually the say 150's for a girl and less for a boy. Not true for all cases but there are so many people that will tell you it was true for them. Was for me!

Wow, seems everyone who answered is saying "no" but when I asked the Q, the majority said yes lol

Nope, I tried that also...we decided to keep the gender a surprise...talked to some friends of mine one had a boy and one had a girl....the boys heart rate was higher then the girls...so much for that. My babies heart rate started at 150 and fluctuates between 127 and 145 depending on if its sleeping or not.
