I'm having a debate in class tomorrow and I have chosen the side that supports gay marriage. Anyone have any really great facts that I can use?

This isn't a question trying to convince me that gay marriage is wrong this is a question to find facts supporting gay marriage.

Well the only arguments you'll likely hear are religious. Merely remind them that it's a legal matter only, same-sex marriage doesn't change church law, just the law of the country.

If they try to argue that it's not natural, merely remind them that you're not there for a debate on the ethics of nature and to debate what's natural, you're there to debate legal rights of same-sex marriage.

Basically, you don't really need good points, you just need to point out all the flaws in their points. Same-sex marriage is plainly logical.

Also do not say gay marriage, say same-sex marriage.

To further drive home the legal aspect, you should also comment about the divorce act needing to change, we had a hiccup in Canada because it wasn't changed to anticipate same-sex divorce

Uhm lastly, read these very carefully, I found them on another question, it might help in your debate:

"12 reasons why gay people should not be allowed to get married:

1. Homosexuality is not natural, much like eyeglasses, polyester, and birth control.

2. Heterosexual marriages are valid because they produce children. Infertile couples and old people can't legally get married because the world needs more children.

3. Obviously, gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

4. Straight marriage will be less meaningful if Gay marriage is allowed, since Britney Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage was meaningful.

5. Heterosexual marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are property, blacks can't marry whites, and divorce is illegal.

6. Gay marriage should be decided by people, not the courts, because the majority-elected legislatures, not courts, have historically protected the rights of the minorities.

7. Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in America, and that’s why Atheists and Agnostics are not allowed to get married either.

8. Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

9. Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

10. Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why single parents are forbidden to raise children.

11. Gay marriage will change the foundation of society. Heterosexual marriage has been around for a long time, and we could never adapt to new social norms because we haven't adapted to things like cars or a longer lifespan.

12. Civil unions, providing most of the same benefits as marriage with a different name are better, because a "separate but equal" institution is always constitutional. Separate schools for African-Americans worked just as well as separate marriages for gays and lesbians will."

My partner and I have been together for 27 years (monogamously). I also know a few other couples that have been together longer (the longest one I know of is 62 years). This would help defeat some part of the myth that gays are promiscuous and can't keep a relationship. Considering my partner is an Over-the-road truck driver (a woman in a man's type of job role) I trust her implicitely when she's out for the week and she also trusts me.
I hope this will help you.

Gay marriages are more honest and mature than straight marriages.

Special privileges and tax cuts for gays that choose to marry.
A small fringe group forcing their agenda and values on everyone else in society.
A perfect symptom from history of a society in decline.
Who cares how you want your nation to be? We will circumvent your laws and take any route to force America to accept our demands.
It is not the small fringe lobby group with big money that's the problem...it is society with it's sickening opinions of right and wrong that is the problem.
I mean hellloooooooo...get with the times! There is no right and wrong...no good and evil. It's all just made up by homophobic republicans in order to justify a war for oil.
Just ask Rosie O'Donnell.
The gays and Al'Qaida need to realize we are fighting the same evil wicked empire known as traditional American values and we need to unite as allies!

Some of it's been said, there is no reason why gays shouldn't marry, it's equality in effect

"Gay" Marriage.

I am going to be commenting about the rash of "gay" marriages
taking place in certain parts of the U.S. The word gay originally
meant happy. But the sex perverts, and that is what they are, sex
perverts, queers and *******, they hijacked the word
gay.

The homosexuals are trying to convince people everywhere that they
should have the right to get married. I'll tell you right now the
idea of two queers calling their perversion a "marriage" gags a
maggot!

But, believe it or not, there is one state in the union that has
condoned "gay marriage", Massachusetts. Other states have what is
called "civil unions". But there is nothing "civil" about two
queers shacking up. Now, thank God, there are some states that have
banned "gay" marriage and more states are considering a ban. One
state, Nebraska, recently had their ban overturned by a federal
judge. That "judge" should be impeached!!!

Romans 4:3 "... For what saith the scripture?" What does the Bible
have to say about "gay" marriage??? The Bible (Authorized King
James Bible) is the final, absolute, authority in all matters. 2
Timothy 3:16 "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is
profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for
instruction in righteousness:"

The Bible clearly defines marriage as being a union between one man
and one woman. Genesis 2:24 "Therefore shall a man leave his father
and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be
one flesh." Matthew 19:4-5 " 4. And he answered and said unto
them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning
made them male and female, 5. And said, For this cause shall a man
leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they
twain shall be one flesh?

That is very plain. Only someone whose conscience has been seared,
1 Timothy 4:2, would dispute it. Now what does God think of two sex
perverts, queers, etc. shacking up and calling it a marriage???
Lets see what His written words, the Bible (Authorized King James
Bible) say.

Genesis 18:20 "And the Lord said, Because the cry of Sodom and
Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous;"
Leviticus 20:13 " If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a
woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely
be put to death; their blood shall be upon them."

Now, I am NOT advocating killing queers. We are not under the Old
Testament law today. I am just showing you what God said about
homosexuality before the law and under the law. Now what does God's
word have to say about it after the law???

Romans 1:24 "Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through
the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between
themselves:"

Romans 1:26-27 " 26. For this cause God gave them up unto vile
affections: for even their women did change the natural use into
that which is against nature: 27. And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence
of their error which was meet."

That is what the Bible (Authorized King James Bible) says about two
homosexuals (queers) shacking up. What anyone else thinks doesn't
matter!!!
