Before you enter any contests, check with Preditors and Editors and Absolute Writer Water Cooler's Bewares and Background Checks forums. Poetry contests are notorious for being scams. Both sites can let you know if the contest you are considering has recieved complaints in the past. While you are at Absolute Write Water Cooler, sign up and go to their poetry forum. It's run by a really nice guy named Poetinahat. Tell him I said hi. Their poetry forum can help direct you to legit contests. Ask a lot of questions. They will be happy to help you learn your way around poetry contests. Steer clear of poetry.com. There is your first piece of advice. It is a total scam. Pax - C

Poetry contest scams could end up costing you about $10 to $25 for entry fee. True poets publish in literary journals usually issued by a university. There are other literary journals like the Paris Review and The Atlantic Monthly that are not published by universities, but those publications are rare. Your best bet would be to get the respect of literary types usually found on university campuses.

The website Preditors and Editors has a comprehensive listing of writing competitions. Check them out. Also, writerswall.com has a good listing of competitions, too.

Good luck!

Poetry.com awards 10,000 dollars to it's winners.
Also look in your newspaper or ask your school about contests. That's where you'll probably get a scholarship from.
