The USA is still the leader of the world economically, politically and morally (mostly).
As to your assertation that the USA is moving farther and farther to the right I couldn't disagree more...both of the major parties in the US are leaning farther and farther left...more and more government. In some areas of the USA you are now being told what to eat, what to drive, what light bulbs to own and told they can't even have a cigarette on their own property.
as to your reference to the embryonic stem cell research...I'd say its based upon results...adult stem cell research has shown the most promise for curing a multitude of diseases. There is no prohibition on the embryonic research right now...private companies can still do it...it just doesnt look like it can generate any real results (as far as what I've been reading about)...and many people who are not even Bible-thumping fundamentalists still see problems with government funding for chopping up embryos/children for use in experiments of dubious value. Why is it that many who support embryonic stem cell research are also the type who hug trees and demand equal rights for animals? Don't you see a strange dichotomy there?

I believe we should be the leader of the free world when we can prove that we actually care about the rest of the world. Yes, we do fund 3rd world countries and everything but that doesn't erase all the disrespect we've shown other countries in the recent past by any means.

We are no longer the leader of the free world. We are now the despised leader of the Third World.
President Bush has indisputably proven that no one nation can be trusted with unchecked power to lead the world. The free world is now in the process of marginalizing our place within the world community.

I personally dont worry about it. But the amount of people flocking to the USA for opportunity, the amount of countries that ask the USA for help and for money... the fact that the USA leads in both money and man hours for things like NATO, WHO, Red Cross and many many other organizations...
That speaks for itself doesnt it.
