work or volunteer at a hospital
cultivate friendships with professors who will write glowing reference letters
travel and see the world
my brother-in-law was on the ski team, I don't know if that helped him or not, but he is a doctor

Put in some volunteer time at a local clinic, helping out in whatever capacity you can. This looks great on your CV!
