the stream in my woods is drying up from the heat and I noticed some fish cry swimming in a shallow isolated puddle that was sure to dry up and kill them, so I took them home but I'm not sure how old they are or even what kind of fish they are, they're about the size of a mosquito larvea. is it ok to feed them now and what type of food would be best? any help will be greatly appreciated!

At the size you mention, it would almost be impossible to identify the fish unless you knew a lot about which kinds live in the stream. You might try giving them finely crushed fish flakes, some frozen daphnia, or frozen baby brine shrimp.

If your fry are minnows, they might survive, but if it's a coldwater species, like trout, they may not. If there's an area of the stream that's downstream of your house where there's still plenty of water, releasing them (so they have the water temperature and natural foods their used to) may be their best chance for survival. They'll also need to have an airstone with a sponge filter so their water has enough dissolved oxygen for them to breathe, but doesn't make too much current or suck them into the filter.

You can use commercial fish food, or just some bread crumbs. The bad news is the will probably die, no matter what you feed them. Unless you have an aerated fish tank with water at the correct PH, your out of luck. Blessings to you for trying.

Yes feed them and go to petsmart or something and ask them what kind of food you should use.
