Not to be too unoriginal, but I truly believe it's the Beatles. I mean it's 40 years later and some of their stuff is still amazing, and relevant. They just had all of the ingredients.

Leave that Rolling Stones stuff at home. Man, there should be a points deduction for not hanging it up when you should. Did anyone see that Super Bowl performance, just pathetic. The Stones WERE a really great band, but they were no Beatles.

The guy who put Hawkwind totally rules by the way. Go Lemmy!

The Beatles are # 1. They influenced lots of bands, and had many # 1 hits.

Led Zeppelin, Kiss, and Black Sabbath, all come in at a close second place.

Best rock band would be Rolling Stones. They took what the Beatles did one step further with Mick's gyrations and sexual lyrics. And they are still able to sell out stadiums today.

Best metal band would be the one that started it all.. Black Sabbath. Every metal band is in debt to them forever.

Best hair band would be Bon Jovi. The changed the direction in which rock bands made videos with the innovative "Livin on a Prayer" and "Wanted Dead or Alive" videos. And Bon Jovi is still very relevant today, as American Idol and CMT have shown.

If your talking the most hits, then the Beatles hands down

The Stones for longevity

Led Zeppelin used to be my favorite band in the early 70's, and is my daughters favorite now (I think thats pretty cool)
