Let me tell you something sort of scary..
I just got my first dose of the Depo shot two weeks ago to the day to stop me from bleeding (I had had my period for a month straight and was dehydrated and anemic because of it). In two weeks I have gained 20 effing pounds.. I KID YOU NOT! Not to mention the amount of side effects I am getting, headaches all the time, now I'm coughing and all I can taste is blood (I've called my Dr. and they want me to go to the ER if I see any blood in my mouth or in coughed up mucus because it could mean a blood clot in my lung, a serious side effect of the Depo Shot). Do a search on side effects of Depo Provera, there are some horror stories out there of some women literally being poisoned by it and the thing to remember is that there is no way to take the shot away once they give it to you! It's a roll of the dice because if you have a bad reaction all you can do is wait for it work it's way out of your system. I feel like medically it was one of the worst choices I have ever made and my husband and I even asked my Dr. a ton of questions beforehand (about weight specifically too because I'm already overweight and I don't need this additional weight!) and we were told that some women gain on it but it's usually only water weight. Again, do some reading online of real women's stories. A lot of women have positively blown up on Depo. I will never ever take another shot of this again, I feel so sick and it's getting worse every day it seems. I wish it had worked out though because the convienience it offers is very nice. But hind sight is 20/20 you know? If I could go back and I wanted to try a Progestin type BC method to also stop my bleeding I would have gone with the mini pill and saw how that went. At least I could have stopped taking that at the first sign of anything amiss... Be careful!
PS- In my quest of Depo knowlege online I have read very mixed things on whether or not it works right away if you get the initial shot during your period or not. Some professional medical documents sugest using a back up form of birth control for two weeks after getting the shot no matter when in your cycle you recieved the first dose. If you get pregnant on Depo there is a 85% higher chance of the baby dying in it's first year of life from a ton of possible things.. No matter which way you go you definately need to do some reading before you make a choice like this. Depo is also now known for causing bone density problems in prolonged use.

I was on the depo shot for three years and i did not gain weight nor did i have my periods at all which was a big plus of being on the shot. I didn't have any problems with it and once i stopped taking it i became pregnant in a year so i think depo is the best birth control out there. The birth control shot is a very effective method of birth control. Over the course of 1 year, fewer than 3 out of 100 typical couples who use the birth control shot every 3 months will have an accidental pregnancy. The chance of getting pregnant increases if you wait longer than 3 months to receive your next shot. In general, how well each type of birth control method works depends on a lot of things. These include whether a person has any health conditions or is taking any medications that might interfere with its use. It also depends on whether the method chosen is convenient — and whether the person remembers to use it correctly all of the time.

Too FEW people have NOT gained weight.
Too MANY people HAVE gained weight.
Its not like people get on depo then all of the sudden pig out. Before depo you would gain or lose a pound and maintain a steady weight. On depo you would gain, no matter if you were eating the way you normally do, or eating healthier.
I would really reconsider this shot. Weight gain is not the only negative side affect.
I was on it for four years and am so glad I am OFF of it.
I am on Kariva now. Not only am I NOT gaining weight, it is slowly coming OFF. And I'm eating the same as I usually do.

I've been on it for 3 1/2 years and haven't gained any weight. I just have a hard time loosing any weight (not that Im really trying hard =) You just need to decide if you'd rather risk gaining a few pounds or risk getting pregnant from forgetting a little pill

My wife has been on the shot for a long time and managed to keep the weight off for the most part. Technically she is up a few pounds from her lowest weight, but I wouldn't say she gain "a lot of weight."

I was on the shot for 3 years, and I did not gain any weight, BUT I was already over weight to begin with, so maybe that had something to do with it.

ive been on it for about a year and a half...i gained probably 10 pounds over that time however i was not exercising or eating healthy so its hard to tell if its from the shot or not. once i started eating healthy and exercising i lost all the weight....
i've heard that all forms of birth control make you gain weight though. i would just pick the most convenient one for you.

I haven't gained any weight. females just eat alot and use it as an excuse for them gaining weight. It just depends on you. Every method of birth control can make you gain weight.
