I'd suggest that you try going into your System Information. To do this, all you need to do is go to Start > All Programs > Acessories > System Information and then make sure the box for Remote Desktop is checked, allowing you to use it.

Also, I'd make sure that both computers are on a network if you're trying to do this from home and that you know the IP Addresses of both of them, just incase.

If none of the above works, why not try a third party software, such as GoToMyPC. They have a free trial that you can use to check things out and see how you like them and how they work for you. If you like it, you can simply pay for it and then you'll be able to access your computer from virtually anywhere with an Internet connection as long as you have the software installed.
