There is no one make or model car someone could point you to. The fact is you're looking at the used car market. And, because these cars are previously owned, they condition of them is highly dependent on how the previous owner drove and maintained the car.

You could buy a car with 30,000 miles on it and if it was owned by an abusive driver, it could be worthless.

You could buy a car with 150,000 miles on it from someone that babied the car while driving it and gave it regular maintenance. It could go last you many good years.

Try to buy your car from someone that doesn't need your money. Rather, they are selling the car because they don't need it anymore. For example, there are always our loved and cherished Seniors that are moving into retirement homes. They often don't need their cars anymore. Service men and women are called out of the country and don't want to store their cars for a year or more are also good deals. Other examples exist.... use your imagination.

If you don't mind about style, a Geo Prizm is a very good buy. It is the exact same car mechanically as a Toyota Corolla but it depreciated quicker because of the brand. Reliability wise, it is basically a Toyota Corolla which has a very sterling reputation.

In fact, the Prizm was built in a Toyota/GM joint venture factory. That means the Prizm was built on basically the same assembly line as the Corolla.

If you do like style, a 1995-1999 Mitsubishi eclipse is one of the few cars that still looks nice all these years alter. The only problem is the Eclipse/Talon do not have a very good reputation for reliability.

for that price, it's gonna be a used car. make sure it gets checked out for wear and tear and whether it's been in any accidents. you could find a good make/model that hasn't been cared for versus a lesser make/model that has had excellent care and is therefore the better buy.
