I need to network, or set up something that is like a network, with two computers that are about two miles apart, and connected to the Internet using DSL. I'd like this network to only be able to access one folder, and be secure enough that those networked cannot get into other files. I have a found a program that does something like this in the way of Onshare, but it wont work on my PC.

An alternative would be to have a program that you can use to directly send and receive files with as much bandwith to that operation as possible. I really am hoping for some kind of network here though.

Any help would be appreciated here.

You need a VPN. (Virtual Private Network) It is built in to most server systems but there is software to allow you build one on your current system.. Need to know what OS you are running and that the other machine is running to tell you what software you need.

You can also use something like http://www.instant-vpn.com/
or GoToMyPc for such purpose.

Or just search for VPN software

If you only share one folder on the machine and just keep the documents you want to share in it that is all anyone will see. The problem with remote connections is that your public ip address is dynamic and therefore you can never be too sure of it. A simple option would be to set port forwarding on your router for the Windows Network ports. Then allow the exception for file and printer sharing in the firewall. Set up very difficult passwords on the machine and set one for the user administrator, big hole in security if this is not set. For relatively limited use like yours you can use the link below from the server machine to check it's IP, the other machine can link if you type in your network places :
\\servers.found.ip.address and log on. Only allow 1 user network access, the less the safer. For more regular use you need to get into setting up vpns and buying fixed IP.

On one area the place your quickbook stuff is stored, purchase a static IP address out of your ISP. Then create a VPN server at this area. From the different area merely make a VPN connection and use that static IP address and connect it with your different area place of work. Its not a brilliant deal in any respect. good good fortune!
