Unless you already have fancy guppy I'd avoid them some betta think they are other betta. Of course sometimes you get a really mellow betta. I'd look at platy/swordtails, molly, danio, and cory cat. Avoid gourami as they are too betta like in behavior. Just keep in mind in a 10 gallon tank you can only really have about 5 slim bodied fish like a betta.

I don't know where that baloney about bettas fighting with guppys got started, but it is ridiculous! Guppys are probably the least aggressive fish in the aquarium trade besides neons and pencilfish. They run from any type of aggressive behavior from other fish. All the guppys are interested in is mating with each other. All of those fish should be able to coexist with each other. The only problem might be with the algae eaters. You don't say what species they are. If they are Chinese algae eaters, you will run into an aggression problem when they get older. After about 2", they get mean and territorial. If they are Siamese algae eaters, they will be OK, they do not get mean. The small bushy or bristle nosed plecos do not get mean either, they would be my first choice in algae eaters for a small tank. They only grow to about 5". Bettas (pronounced bet-tah, not bay-tah) only fight with other male bettas. Their male to male aggression is all based on the protection of a breeding site. The only reason they would show any aggression toward a fish other than another betta is if the other fish intruded into the area he is protecting as a breeding site. Bettas typically do not select breeding sites in a community tank. It has happened though, as with all rules, there are exceptions. Continued fighting with other male bettas is to determine which is the strongest and which will take over the breeding site. In the wild, as soon as both males realize which one is stronger, the weaker one leaves and the stronger one stays. In an aquarium, there is nowhere for the defeated male to escape to, so they continue to fight, usually to the death of one or the other. 8

A few corydoras catfish would be a good additon. They stay small and keep mostly to the bottom of the tank. Some rasboras would be okay as well.

You could also get a few freshwater shrimp, an apple snail, or an African drawf frog. You choices don't have to be limited to fish!

mollys are a little bit bigger than guppies and they would prolly go good with them and the betta fish. also i would recomend to put the betta in a small fish bowl cause in the wild they live in small little rice patty puddles and they like to just float and not swim too much make sure if you do to put either spring water or put tap water in a empty soda bottle and let it sit for a wekk do this every time its too ensure long life of your fish and they cant handle "fresh" tap water
