I'd like to plant flowers, but I don't want the weeds in there. I've heard of people using the black, garbage bag-like stuff, to choke out the weeds. How does that work? Or do you have other ideas for my dirty weeded front yard?

You can use plastic but are bbtter off with landscape fabric. It allows water to seep through and plastic does not. Put the fabric down. Cut through it to plant your flowers. Put mulch or stones on top to both hold it down and have it look better.

I would go to a home store and by a weed killing chemical and spray the area where you want to plant flowers. There's lots of different kinds on the market. Someone at the store should be able to point you in the right direction. You'll probably have to wait a couple of weeks before you plant anything because of the chemicals. Be careful with the spray as many of the brands will kill the good grass as well. The black garbage bag-like stuff is called weed mat. You put it down to prevent weeds from germinating. It's porous so water can get through but the weeds won't penetrate it. If you put this down you won't be able to plant a ground cover or any other type of plants that spread via the root system. If you put this down you simply cut holes in it for the plant material.

The best way to eliminate the weeds is to buy a weed killer and spray the area you want to use. Then after the weeds have died off, turn the soil and amend with some fertilizer and put in your plants. This will take at least 2 weeks from start of finish, but the results will make you very happy. Good Luck!

spray the weeds with roundup. This kills all vegetation, but doesn't poison the soil. after the weeds die back, spade up that area and mix in some potting soil and plant your flowers. Keep in mind that certain types of flowers like sun and some like shade.. plant the right ones for the area.

Once they are planted, spread a little fertilizer around the new plantings and then a 3-4" deep layer of mulch. Water this all in and.. enjoy your new flower bed.

Use straight white vinegar...pour on the weeds and let them die...till the soil and amend with some manure...then plant..I have used plastic tarp for planting...you place it down and cut holes where you want the flowers...they work pretty good...But first I would kill the weeds...Good Luck
