Aswell as blocking out light, keep our eyes from drying out, closing eye lids also has a calming effect if you have ever noticed, so I think they are very important if not essential for sleep.

sure, or else, you would never be able to completely block the light from getting to you and then you wouldn't be able to sleep.

no, my roommate had surgery on his eye because of a lazy eye, now he sleeps with one eye open.
