You lose the mucus plug when you start dilating. Your cervix opens up and then it is able to come out. Not everyone loses it before they go into labor. Some, lose it in pieces, others lose it in one 'sitting'.

You need to start dialating to lose your mucus plug. I've heard that some don't know when they lose their plug. I knew because I looked in the toilet and there it was! 3 weeks later, I gave birth. Some don't lose theirs until just before.
I really don't recommend this, but if you're worried about the baby's size and delivery, talk to your doctor about an earlier induction. I'd wait at least 2 more weeks, though. My nephew was born at 36 weeks and had problems that required incubation, a feeding tube and a 2 week stay in the hospital.

i never noticed losing my mucus plug with either of my babies, even though i was watching for it! i think it's pretty easy to lose it and not notice.
and yes, as you dilate your mucus plug comes out.... but keep in mind that losing your plug means that labor is coming in the next couple of weeks, not necessarily soon.
finally, you should know that dr's guesses about the baby's weight are not always accurate. my son was supposed to be really big because i was measuring big. they did an ultrasound and said he was 8 lb. 3 oz. at 37 weeks, which would make him over 10 lb. by the time i delivered! the dr scheduled me for a c-section since i am small. my son was born at 39 weeks, and only weighed 8 lb. 3 oz. .... i was so mad i'd had a c-section!!!! i have heard stories like this from MANY women.
i know how hard it is to be patient and wait for baby to come... good luck to you!

You will loose your mucus plug once your cervix begins to dialate. However, it's important to be aware that early dialation can take place over several weeks, and that loosing or starting to lose your plug doesn't mean the baby will be born immediately. I lost mine gradually over several days.
I know it's an exciting time waiting for your beautiful baby to arrive. Try to relax. These last weeks in the womb are crucial for finishing developing the lungs, and babies who are born full term are so much healthier than those born early! Your baby will come when he is finished growing. In the meanwhile, try to enjoy these last moments of having him all to yourself, feeling his movements, and having that beautiful closeness you share now.

I never knew when I lost my plug. My doctor's always informed me at my appointments. I think I lost my plug a couple of weeks before I had my babies and I stayed dialated to 2 for those two weeks too. Then labor started and it was no time and they were here.
My babies were 9'4 oz, 8'6 oz, and 8'4 oz. I expect this one to be somewhere in the weight range too and I'm not overweight.
Stay patient because it won't be long.

The mucus plug is slimey , stringy and sometimes blood streaked. Yes you will know when you are losing it. It will just come away mostly in dribs and drabs when you pee. You can lose it for up to a week before the baby is born - every day - so it`s not a sign of labour - no panic stations. It won`t come away constantly, just now and then, mainly when you pee you will see it when you wipe yourself. Don`t worry and don`t go dashing off to hospital. gOOD LUCK. X

Any the place from 24 hours to 2 weeks. With my first 2 youngsters, I had them an afternoon later, my third I went 2 weeks late & had to have a c-section :( a solid sign that tough artwork is coming quickly is in the journey that your plug had a touch blood/pinkish seem to it. yet while not, if distinctive for each guy or woman. solid luck!

I lost mine when my doctor did an internal exam I wasn't dilated at all, she just knocked it out, then they can regrow after 2 weeks, mine never had time I ended up having him about 10days after, but i didn't dilate until labour, i went from 0cm-5cm in an hour and 5cm-10cm in 20minutes, so i wasnt dilated a head of time, but the mucous plug is really gross looking. I had my son at 37weeks, he was 7lbs8oz, so I know what you are saying, I definently would not have wanted him to wait until 40weeks, it may just be coincidence but I went into labour the same day I ended up doing our towns riverwalk, its about 3kms, so try sex and walking,

No - you will not always notice and you may lose it more than once over the course of the last couple of months. Dilated or not.
Forget what they tell you about weight!!!!!! They do NOT know how much your baby weights - they said my son was 9-10 lbs. and he came out just under 8 lbs.
P.S. - Weight has nothing to do with ease of labor - my 10 lb. 2 oz. baby was easier to push out than my 7 lb. 15oz boy.

Yes you will know when you lose it
it feels like you wet your self...
some women don't always lose it though...
the nurses have to pop it...
my niece was fully dialated and her mucus plug was still there.
soooo good luck and hope you have a healthy and happy baby.... :)
