Your body will get the urge to push. Pushing through a contraction actually feels better than just laying there through the contraction.
Yes the contractions still hurt while you're pushing, pushing hurts too, but your body will tell you that it is time to push - and you will WANT to push!!!

No actually one doesn't push when ya feel a contraction. You may be in labor for hours and have many contractions. It's only when you are fully dilated with strong contractions coming almost steady that you can push. You will feel like pushing before you get to this point. You'll be able to feel the baby moving slowly downward with the contractions and want to push it out. But you must wait until it is way down to the opening, when they can see the head, then push. Dr. will tell you when.

It isn't easy not to push. You're body will feel like doing it so much, but you must hold back.. It hurts of course. Really pushing relieves the contractions or seems to. Once the baby is out, instantly, no more pain. You will sure be tired from all of this hard work. But, you get to have a brand new baby of your very own.

You are not supposed to push until you're dilated. Pushing WITH the contraction helps ease the baby out of the birth canal. Yes, pushing makes it hurt worse, but the contraction is your body's way of helping you push.

You dont push until your water breaks or until the doctor tells you to. I was told not to push because my daughters head was stuck up on my pelvic bone. I had to have an emergency csection.
