Herbs should be used with extreme caution and under the advice of a Certified Herbalist if at all possible.
Blue Cohosh
What is it?
Biological name: Caulophylum thalictroides
Common names: Papoose Root, Squaw Root, Blueberry Root, Blue or Yellow Ginseng, Beechdrops
What happens? Blue Cohosh is an abortifacient and a strong emmenagogue that contains two substances, caulosaponin and caulophyllasaponin, that cause strong uterine contractions when used as a tincture or decoction. Never ingest the essential oil or the berries, and be sure to drink plenty of water.
What are the risks?
- Blue Cohosh is not recommended to anyone with heart problems of any kind, including a history of or heightened risk for heart attack, high blood pressure, low blood pressure, or stroke. Low blood pressure can be lowered even further. Rapid heartbeat can occur, and arteries that supply blood to the heart can be narrowed (causing considerable damage to those with high blood pressure). Heart damage has occurred in laboratory animals given Blue Cohosh.
- Blue Cohosh is not recommended to women who are not supposed to use the birth control pill, since it contains estrogenic properties and can have estrogen-like side effects. If you have an estrogen-dependent tumor, do not use Blue Cohosh.
- Blue Cohosh should not be used if you have kidney problems of any kind, since it can stress the
kidneys if used in excess.
- Blue Cohosh should not be used if you have diabetes or glaucoma.
- Blue Cohosh can be very irritating to the skin and mucous membranes and can cause a rash and/or irritation. Do not inhale it or get it in your eyes.
- Other minor side effects include pain in the arms and legs, vomiting, pounding headache, sweating, abdominal pain, and muscle weakness.
Using Black Cohosh to disrupt pregnancy, black cohosh is a helper herb, helping to prepare the cervix to release the contents of the uterus. It is often used during childbirth to help ripen the cervix in preparation for delivery. It is best used combined with blue cohosh or combines well with vitamin c & dong quai.
Dosage:
Standard Decoction (root): Simmer 5-15., 1-4 Tbsp., 3-4 times a day.
Standard Tincture: 1/4 - 1 tsp., 3-4 times a day.
Powdered (root): 1-4 #0 capsules, 3-4 times a day. 4
Pre-made Capsules: Women who have used black cohosh in combinations seem to be successful when dosages are in the range of 500 to 1000 mg every four hours.
Other sources:
# Steep 2 tsp in a pint of water. Take 2-3 Tbsp 6 times a day. 12

Don't automatically reject the idea of adoption because you are older and have several kids. My brother in law and his wife just adopted a beautiful baby girl whose mother was 32 and couldn't afford a 5th baby. She is healthy and is in a wonderful home. I do believe that it is your choice whether or not to get an abortion but I just hope you look at alternatives. Who ever adopts your baby will probably be willing to pay all expenses. There are so many couples out there that would love to raise this child in a healthy environment. Also, I don't think that the herbal thing is the right thing to do. It could seriously harm the child and you might not abort. If you absolutely see abortion as your only option then go to a doctor and do it the right way.

Having any abortion is a dangerous risk to take. From reports that show it is SAFER to deliver a baby than to abort one, I would not advise or suggest anyone have an abortion. There is a BIG risk of internal bleeding from one. It also leaves someone possibly emotionally scarred with guilt after. I know someone that had one and they said they NEVER forget about what that child COULD have been otherwise. They think of how old they would be, etc. Never heard of an herbal abortion so don't know if that is the term to use. I also have to ask what would you tell one of the four kids you have when any find out you had that done then? It may be a strain financially but aren't four already an expense that it is not much more of one to add one more? Get yourself fixed or have your partner get fixed, then you won't have to make that choice ever again. Please don't take an accident out on a little baby, give it up for adoption. IF you don't want them someone else does. Think about options first, that is all I am relaying here. There are more than one other choice to make. Adopting couples can pay for the birth expense and the child gets a loving home. Abortions aren't safe for the woman having it done. I have heard very bad stories from women that had one. Think of your own safety in this also.Herbs can be dangerous with bad side effects. Some babies survive abortion attempts also, with some birth defects possibly as a result . It is not worth doing.

First of all I am niether pro choice or not. I have never been put in a situation to consider it. I have never heard of herbal abortion , not to say there isnt something out there about it but if you seriously want an abortion I would enlist the services of a professional or adoption.Right or wrong it is all your choice but dont jepordize your life in matters best left to professionals you have 4 children to worry about.

First of all, it upsets me that the other responders did not read your question thoroughly. I did and realize you wrote "pro choice". What a judgemental world we live in!
Anyway, I do agree with one person's response. Usually the herbal remedies do not work. Often it causes complications for you and you would require a D&C. My best advice is for you to contact Planned Parenthood who can perform a safe and complete abortion. It is far less costly then if something went wrong with an herbal try and you had to go to a hospital, pay for antibiotics, not be able to care for your other children.
Good luck

Wow, if you guys got pregnant with a vasectomy and a condom, then this baby really wanted to be here! I know you can't imagine having a 5th child, but please consider what a trauma it will be for you to have an abortion. The post traumatic stress-like symptoms and guilt that most women experience after abortion is hugely downplayed, and I urge you to consider what this will do to you emotionally and the effects it will have on your family. Yes, I know having a child will also affect all of you whether you decide to keep it or possibly even give it up for adoption, but I guarantee you you will be much better for it.
I once heard the phrase,
"Everyone who supported slavery was free. Everyone who supports abortion was born."
You have been entrusted with a human life and spirit. Please, please, don't extinguish it.

You should have gotten the after pill from your gyno. I would not use herbs, you can just harm yourself. Go to the doctor and get the medical procedure done. Also think about other procedures like vasectomy for your husband or you can tie your tubes so this won't be a worry anymore.

There is no best way....just don't do it. If you didn't want a fifth child you should have taken extra precaution. How can you look at your four beautiful children and still have the courage to kill this one?
Whoa...hold up. Vasectomy, bc, and a condom??? What do you think we are idiots? Who believes this. You probly really weren't on birth control either were you?
