How many of you have been on the receiving end of a hate crime? If you're comfortable saying so what happened and what were the circumstances surrounding it?

(personal answer: I have once thus far, I was beat up by a drunk guy for being a transsexual)

I used the term "hate crime" as a way to indicate the motivation for the crime. The question more specifically being "Have you ever had criminal action taken against you solely because of your sexual orientation or gender identity?"

I have been shot ("only" in the knee) by a group of rednecks for being gay.
I have been beaten and had my skull busted for being gay.
I have lost family, friends, jobs, apartments for being gay.

Hate crimes? Yeah. lots of 'em...

And the fookers STILL haven't gotten me down! Hah!

A student came in an hit another student who was gay. The victim received several stitches. The perpetrator was made to move to another school, and had to attend some sort of violence classes with his parents, and to do community service.

Two gay students were holding hands and walking down a sidewalk. Two guys from different houses came out and threatened them, saying it was "their" street. A police report was made on the two guys who were threatening them.

I've been verbally harasssed. But thats about it. Then again it was fairly well known that I allways carried means for self protection.

I don't know that hate crimes enhancers would deter assault, but I'm pretty sure a concealed carry law would.

So far (fortunately) I've only been verbally harassed. Hopefully the Matthew Shepard Act passes through the Senate.

My one friend was beaten to death a couple of years back because she was a transsexual (my friend was born a man but always consider her as one of the girls). She was my best friend. She got beat to death and left along side of the road to bleed to death because of who she was/is.

I have been physically and verbally attacked, harassed by the police, and my car vandalized... by blacks because I'm white and by blacks AND whites because I'm a "w*gger", a "wannabe", a "black man stealer", a "n*gger lover", a "cracker wh*re".... The list goes on.... The names get much worse.

****Great point, rumpran. I agree with you except that I don't think hate is the motivator for all crimes.

I'm sorry for you. When I was in high school I was the protector of the small. I still am. I can't believe that the constitution has not been amended to protect "sexual orientation". It's a joke.
