A gateway is a device which allows a PC to talk to the Internet, such as a regualr modem or a DSL modem. A gateway will have two ports, one for a single computer and one for the Internet connection.
A router is a device which allows multiple PCs to tal to each other as a network. A router will have multiple ports for connecting multiple PCs.
Most router include a gateway, in that there will be one special port to which you connect a cable to the Internet an uplink port). Then the router acts as a gateway for all the computers, giving them access to the Internet.
Unless your DSL modem has multiple ports for attaching multiple PCs, it can not be used as a router. You would need to purchase a router and attach a cable from the special uplink port of the router to the PC port of the modem.
If the DSL Modem has multiple ports, check the documentation for how to set up the router portion. It is (unfortunatly) different for each make and model. If the DSL modem is rented from your ISP, you should be able to get their assistance in configuring it.

It sounds like you have DSL (and a DSL modem) and want to put in a router. This isn't a one-in, one-out situation. You'll still need the modem to talk to the DSL line.
Disconnect the DSL modem from the computer and plug that line into the router, then plug the router into the computer where you disconnected the DSL with another cable. Follow the instructions that came with the router.

You can not. You need to buy a router, which is a more advanced type of gateway.
