When the terrorists responded with a surge of their own? I thought that was called 'emboldening the terrorists'? I thought that was why we couldn't have benchmarks...it announces to the enemy what our plan is...so, how is this any different?

wingshooter, if you read the article, it is not I who call it a surge, it is Bush who calls it that.

Because calling up and dispatching 30,000 troops cant be a secret..Besides, the Liberals in Congress would go more berserk than they already are. I wish we didn't have to tell the Liberals, Congress, the meMedia or general know nothing public anything. Things would work much better, if it were just done.

This may come as a shock to you, but posturing and threatening isn't generally considered to embolden the enemy - it may not often successfully intemidate the enemy, but it's not 'emboldening' them.

OTOH, promising to give up and run away at a pre-determined date, or declaring that your side has 'lost' the war already, might be seen as encouraging by those trying to make you give up and run away, so they can claim 'victory.'

How are you going to call up 30,000 more troops, and get them there without an announcement? If the democrat would quit trying to micromanage this war maybe it could have been done. and you call that a surge from the insurgents??? Please!

Because he believes as he always has that more death & violence on both sides will be better for the US "security" in the long run.

"Don't trust an Iraqi, now! They'll chop yer nuts off & rape your women! Why? 'Cuz I said so."
