Always safest to saddle up...but bareback is much more fun, so maybe once you've had an opportunity to ride the same horse a number of times, and you're both comfortable with each other, you might be ready for bareback riding.
And it's even more fun when wearing chaps -- yee-haw!

I always liked riding bareback when I was younger. But, now I prefer the saddle to bareback. I'm weigh more now. and it's a long ways down! Although, a couple of years ago, I went to look at a horse to buy and I didn't take a saddle with me and my two youngest grown kids went with me. Ages 19 daughter and my 22 year old son. I looked at a beautiful paint horse and the man just had a halter on her. He didn't have a saddle or a bridle with him. He put a lead rope on her and across her nose and made a make shift bridle and I rode her bareback. She rode really well, and I let her trot and run and stuff. My kids were amazed! They didn't know I could do that. lol I bought her. Sometimes, you have to ride that way, so it's good to know how. I found out a long time ago that if I wait to buy something that I really like, then it will be sold to someone else, if I wait on buying it. And I knew she would be gone if I waited! I ride her with a saddle now, and I haven't ridden bareback sense! I think anyone that rides horses needs to know how to ride both ways!

bareback is more fun, but you better saddle up, just in case. You don't know where that "horse" has been before...

if you've never ridden saddle, specially when you call it a horseride thingy, you are going to need something to hold on too.

Since it doesn't sound like you do much riding, I'd suggest a saddle, you can never be too careful.

If you haven't ridden in a while, you better saddle up or you won't be walking very well for a while!
