you push down on the strings, between the frets (the little metal bars).

Your finger has to be on the string to change the note. Essentially what you're doing is shortening the string to make the sound higher. Each fret changes the note by a half-step.
So for example, on the first string which is an E, if you put your finger on that string in the 1st fret, you are playing an F. Next fret, F# and so on up the fretboard. A chord is simply a series of notes played together.

putting your fingers in between the strings would just muffle the sound and plain old wouldn't do any good at all. of course you have to press on the strings in the spaces between the frets.
you should be able to find a chord diagram somewhere that will show you a few chords to strum.

No, you place your fingers on the strings.
What somebody probably told you is that when you press down on the strings, press down between the *fret wires*, not directly on them. The fret wires are the raised things that are perpendicular to your strings (and only as wide as the fretboard). They get closer together as you move up the fretboard.

you press the string as snugly as possible it dose not take much pressure so don't hurt yourself doing it. the tighter you press down the clearer the sound will be. im sure you know what the fret board (finger board) is on a guitar. the things that are raised up are called frets. you place your fingers between the frets.

I can't imagine stuffing your fingers between the strings would even produce any noise. Of course, hold the strings down! Then again, perhaps I misunderstood your question....
