Yahoo now has an Environment category, but where is the very important category of Ecology? It appears to have disappeared completely...

I'm afraid that I disagree with Byderule. Ecology isn't Environment, at least not in the limited sense that the new category of 'Environment' suggests.

According to Byderule 'Environment' and 'Ecology' both mean 'home' and should therefore be treated as exactly the same. However, according to the full meaning and definition of 'Ecology' (source MacMillan Encyclopaedia), this is clearly not the case.

"Ecology is a scientific discipline concerned with the relationships of different species with each other and with the environment (habitat) in which they live. A community of organisms and their habitat is called an 'ecosystem'."

'Ecology' deserves proper recognition as a scientific discipline within Answers instead of being simply dismissed out of hand.

Perhaps other people's comments and suggestions in the Forum might help to decide where an 'Ecology' category should be placed within Answers, or whether 'Environment & Ecology' should be re-considered as a more inclusive category instead of simply having 'Environment' as a category heading all on its own.

Environment is ecology
ecology means to know or to study the home
the home meaning our Environment

it is a word half latin and half greek

so Environment and ecology really means the same in the end
its either the place or the knowlege about the place

the word Environment is bigger
-------------------------------------
and maybe its my fault ,i have been bugging them about making a seperate category for Environment ,not hidden under mathmatics
i wanted to get there in one click and make it easier to send friends there

i wrote Jane twice ,3 times to the forum ,put a question out asking the same ,and wrote twice to Al Gore asking for him to push yahoo to get global warming more to the front ,because he has a green badge

maybe this made a difference
and i am not sorry
sorry

What would you ask in ecology that you couldn't ask in environment or biology or politics? The more categories they create, the harder it is to find the one you want. You just need to think a little bit more about your question.

The were doing restructuring the other day and I guess that it did not have enough traffic; possibly. They could take the " alternative " category any time they wanted to and I would not mind.
