The terminology comes from the old Vinyl days of music.
An LP is a full album, an EP is a single, or small album with only a few tracks.

LP stands for Long Play. This is a full album -- expect 9+ songs, a length of at least 30 minutes, etc. EP stands for Extended Play. It's too short to qualify as an LP (an EP tends to have between four and eight songs and last 15 to 25 minutes), but longer than a single, which is just two or maybe three songs.
