It is called refrigerant, and it come in different "numbers" depending on the application and/or temp it is working for.
"Freon" is a trade brand name of refrigerant made by Dupont chemical. There are many other brand names out there, but Freon was one of the first to come out wirh it; hence, the name Freon is commonly used.

Freon. It is now regulated by the E.P.A. and you must have a certification to purchase it or install it. You also need very expensive equipment for doing this type work.

Freon. But, if you are thinking of a do-it-yourself recharge forget about it. It has been controlled and only a licensed HVAC tech can get their hands on it. Unless you know someone...
