It can serve many purposes, it may be the only way for them to communicate a need, they may just be releasing tension (atistic children have no ability to filter information, they hear, see, smell, taste and feel everything), or they may like the feel of the crying and like the noise. First check that all needs are met (not hungry, tired, cold etc) and be extra sure to check that their clothes don't irritate them (autistic kids sometimes have tag issues or the clothes rub them wrong). Then help the child to eliminate some of the sensory input (a quiet darkened room with a big bean bag to roll on or lay under can work wonders). If all else fails, help your child to his room where he can cry and you can have peace in the rest of the house.
Don't be afraid to talk to the doctor and the school district about the crying, they should be able to help you find the cause and help you make your lives more comfortable.

When a baby crys, any baby, it is because they are either wet, hungry, or just want to be held...for whatever reason,...and maybe have gas in their tummy....I don't know how old your little one is, but we used to give our little ones some sterile water with a tiny bit of kayro syrup in it, and soothed them...rock the baby to sleep, and cuddle it and give it some security...like all of us, sounds pretty normal to me..
