Right Now, I am really looking into pharmacy school. I am almost a junior in high school and am trying to plan early. I just wanted to know if it is really worth it. I like science and biology and anything really medical. The only thing is I am really afraid of vomit and I hate public speaking. I heard somewhere that public speaking is a requirement of pharmacy school. Is this true? If anybody has any knowledge of that let me know. I want a job where I am not really in contact with a lof sick people, like nursing or a doctor. Maybe physicians assistant?? If there are any other well paying ($50,000 and up) medical careers that are not too involved with sickness, as much as possible anyway, please let me know!!

I feel the same as you! I got accepted to Pharmacy school and will start this fall. I think being a pharmacist is a great idea for you, but you must also really like chemistry. DO NOT be a physician assistant!! You will see people getting sick to their stomach ALL DAY LONG! So learn to love chemistry and yes, be ready to take speech before you get in. Its a core requirement for most schools anyways. I have to take it this summer before I start pharm school. Good Luck!

Well for starters, you are on the right track by taking an interest in sciences and medical related subjects because most pharmacy schools require undergraduate studies in biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, anatomy, physics, as well as calculus and some general ed courses. You will have to take a speech class, but it will definitely improve your social skills for the better. As far as the vomiting, whether working in a hospital or retail setting, you will not be directly exposed to that because pharmacists are more behind the scenes preparing medications, as opposed to doctors and nurses. So definitely think about it, a career in pharmacy is very rewarding!!

Public speaking is extremely important in pharmacy. Public speaking is normally required for prepharm. In pharmacy, you will give a number of presentations. For rotations, a normal activity is to give a presentation to other healthcare professionals.
If you can't stand vomiting, don't be a physician's assistant. In fact, healthcare may not be a good choice, in general. You will become immune to it. Another fun prereq is anatomy lab. A good course will include cadavers.
If you don't like sick people then healthcare is not for you. Community pharmacists see sick people all day long.
Healthcare jobs which pay at least 50k: RN, MD, PharmD, Optometry, Dentist, Physical Therapy, Nurse Practioner, Occupational therapy, I'm not quite sure about Nutrition and audiology,

I am a pharmacy major (well, I major in Bio but I am going to pharm school in a year and a half). Yes, it is worth it. Financially atleast (100,000+ a year), but I must admit, it isnt the most exciting job in the world.

As for seeing vomit, you wont have to worry about that if you go into pharmacy, all you'll have to do is count pills, fill prescriptions, and tell patients how to use there meds.

As for public speaking, it was never a requirement for me and Im almost positive pharm schools couldnt care less if youve taken speach. But it may be apart of the of your General Ed, which means everyone has to take it. But thats a good thing for you anyways, you dont want to live your life in fear. Im actually taking speach10 right now just because I want to become a better speaker, but it isnt required for me.

So if you dont want to be in contact with sick people, pharm is right for you.

fortunately for you you don't need to decide quite yet.

What you do need to do right now is:

take all the math you can in high school

take all the science courses you can, especially chemistry, physics, biology, physiolgy.

make sure their is a heavy writing component to your English classes

become fluent in Spanish

And take AP versions of all of this.

When you graduate, perhaps you'll have a better idea of what you want to do. As a pharmacist I never have had to deal with vomit.....for what it's worth.

One other thing, you'd better get over your aversion to speaking in public, no matter what job you end up doing.

Best of luck!!
