From August to October 1944, representatives of France, the Republic of China, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the Soviet Union met to elaborate the plans at the Dumbarton Oaks Estate in Washington, DC. Those and later talks produced proposals outlining the purposes of the organization, its membership and organs, and arrangements to maintain international peace and security and international economic and social cooperation.

Yes. The US is one of the main organizers of the UN and it was created shortly after WW2 in an attempt to keep those kinds of things from ever happening again. The UN headquarters is in New York as well.

President Truman and Secretary of State Marshall were key to its formation and they and the rest of the winning powers of WWII attempted to form an entity that would not have the weaknesses that were seen in the League of Nations. If we turn our backs on the UN, we'd be acting against our best interests in such a way that the rest of the world will view it as confirmation of their suspicion that we actually have gone as crazy as the proverbial betsy bug.

I think it helped organize it. We had the concept with the league of Nations which was disbanded because of their general uselessness and ineffectiveness. Hmm..sound familiar? Perhaps its time for a major Re-org at the UN.
