I mean, yes they can be taken out, but isn't that taking your constitutional rights away. It's a type of freedom. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness...etc. You can't tell someone that is gay they cant be gay if they want to work here. And don't say, well you can't just stop being gay. because if i pay damned money to get my lip pierced, i shouldnt have to take it out because someone doesnt like the way it looks. That is disciminatory and is just as bad as not hiring someone that looks different.

To those that say the piercing was a choice. Being gay or of a certain religion is a choice. Piercing is a way of personal expression, not dress. I can understand if you have a tatoo that is vulgar or insulting, you would have to cover it up. But a hoop through your lip or eye brow is completley harmless.

Just say that your religion prevents you from taking off your piercing, and the company will not be able to ban you from wearing it on the basis of "religious freedom". I'm sure you can find some religion out there that mandates the wearing of piercings. If not, just make one up.

They can and it is legal. Yes it is discrimination in a way as you may be able to perform whatever job as well as anybody or even better.
But real world as unfair as it may be..... in humanity people like to be around others who are like minded. Piercings and tats look like one thing. It looks like that one needs to make a statement to be an individual..... not having to have something in what they are to define them.
Say you are hiring someone. Do you pick the person who realized that piercing could be a detriment in their future or the the person who just did it. It says a lot about the person.
Yes again it is a shame. I know a women who is smart, well dressed and good at her job. Amazingly so. But you can tell that she once upon a time had piercings. Her company accepts this but she can't move up because of the attitudes of people the company deals with.
One could drink, smoke and do whatever but nobody trusts someone who looks like they party. It does not matter what race one is......... mess your face up and people judge you.

No, companies have the right to present a certain atmosphere in their establishment and if piercings does not fit, then you or anyone else does not have a job. A five star establishment would not hire a waiter with piercing and tats because it does not reflect their upscale feel and would not fit what they are trying to sell.

NEWS FLASH!!! You have the right to pierce any part of your body and proudly display them (within the limits of decency). Others aslo have the right to not associate with you. Others are also allowed to express themselves by saying that is not a lifestyle I wish to promote. Freedom of expression, regardless of what you would like to believe, works both ways. And don't even think about crying discrimination. You had a clear and consious choice in putting holes in your body.

Sorry, dude, you're in the wrong. When you work for a company, you represent their image, and they have the right to be represented in a way they deem appropriate. Your appearance can cost them money if customers don't want to do business with them because you look "weird" to them. You got that piercing because it says something specific about you (which is a message you want to convey)-that's your choice, not the choice of a perspective employer.

Damn dress codes.
However you can get around it if you claim the piercing has religious or racial cultural meaning. You supervisor will probably back off just to be on the same side even if he is in the right. Just discuss it in a really calm and polite fashion and throw in the phrase "kind of feel oppressed" or somesuch after mentioning its religious or racially cultural significance.

You are wrong. When an employer pays you a wage, you represent the company. If employers don't want their employees looking like aboriginal idiots, they don't have to keep them. We have laws that say an employer cannot discriminate on the basis of color. No laws exist that say employers have to hire people with piercings that are visible.

In California (of course) a young woman working for a firm (dk which type) had her tongue pierced despite being warned about it; she was fired, but hey, along comes Gloria Allred and her magic lawsuit powers and the pig won!

Not all discrimination is illegal. The Constitution says we cannot be discriminated against because of race, age, gender, or religion.
The Boy Scouts of American are able to disallow membership due to sexual orientation just as all private organizations are.
Americans have no God given right to pierce their bodies unless it is involved in a religious ceremony.
In my opinion, as a person that can hire others, piercings other than ear lobes indicate lack of discretion.

Are you people serious???
A company can not hire you for any reason they want, be it your piercings, tattoos, etc. It is NOT TAKING AWAY YOUR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS!
NOWHERE in the constitution does it give you the right to get a good job. You get ugly face piercings, you work at Wendys the rest of your life. Deal with it.
