Why does aluminium and iron react to form molten iron?

The reaction between aluminium and iron oxide is used to weld together railway lines, the aluminium displaces the iron; but why is the iron that is left molten?

Look up "Thermit".

This reaction is extremely exothermic, and the heat generated is sufficient to leave the iron molten for a while.
