You would have to first answer the following questions before shortlisting the brands and models. What are you using this for - as a student/ business? Will you be carrying it around often - if so, you would need a really thin & light notebook. Are you a gamer sort of person who strives for performance? Lastly, or you just want an economical decent notebook and that will make you happy. No point getting a cheap notebook and it does not meet your objectives as you will waste your $ ultimately. So..

Thin, light and small to be able to carry around easily - Fujitsu
Gamer - Alienware/ DELL (high end)
Economical & Decent (do not bother abt features) - DELL/ Acer

Mac's always a good choice. But if you want a PC, why not go to a local CostCo or Sam's Club (if you live near one)? Their prices are very good for PCs....CostCo is advertising a Hewlett Packard laptop with 2 GB RAM and over a 100 GB harddrive for 999.00.

I own a Gateway and I've usually had a good experience with their computers. Another option would be to look at Gateway (or Dell) online and custom design your laptop.

Ebay has good deals on IMac books. I got a Toshiba w/ Windows at Staples for $600. I'm no expert but these work for my family (3 /I books)
U can add on to them as u save more $$.
