Alice Cooper who is a mixture of styles, though Raise Your Fist and Yell and Brutal Planet are very metal. Alice brought theatrics into music and has influenced just about everyone in hard rock. He was the first to use makeup, etc and he is still a great live performer and songwriter. Cooper is better at age 59, than most people are at 19. Anyone who doesn't own any Cooper needs to turn in their hard rock/heavy metal membership card, lol. Of course with all these teenage "I like metal but I have no clue about anyone who has been performing since the late 60's is", I am sure they would say one of these new talentless bands or Metallica who hasn't put out a good album since Master of Puppets.

A lot of people aren't explaining why they like the band...
My favorite metal band is Manilla Road. They've been around since 1977 and have released 13 full-length albums including one in 2005. Their style ranges from straight-up heavy metal complete with powerful riffs, awesome solos, and catchy verses and choruses to epic, complex, more emotion-filled songs with sometimes doomy passages (think early Black Sabbath). The vocalist has a very odd and unique style that kind of sounds like he's singing while holding his nose shut, but it sounds very cool if you have an open mind.
Unfortunately, their albums are pretty hard to find (even on eBay) and I've only managed to get a hold of 5 of the 13, but my favorites are Crystal Logic (1983) and Gates of Fire (2005). When I described their style, Crystal Logic is more of the first kind and Gates of Fire is more of the second, but they both have a mixture of both styles.

The Jeff Beck Group. They weren't exactly metal (metal didn't exist when they came out), but they were one of the very first rock bands to drive rock harder; even before Led Zeppelin ever released an album. Look them up on Wikipedia.

Black Sabbath because they created heavy metal and every album they did, no matter who the singer was, is still worth listening to.

Wow...metal is such a broad term these days.
I love old Metallica, pre-Justice For All.
I've always loved Helmet.
Holding it down these days is Disturbed, of course.
