Yeah, it is reallllllly important they know.
But it's even MORE important that you NOT lie.
If you're applying for ANY form of FEDERAL financial aid, and you lie, you can not only discover the aid has been canceled, but you can find yourself being prosecuted for fraud.
As a side-bar, if you lie on your financial aid form, you'll also have to lie on your application... and if it's discovered you lied on your application... well, the consequences CAN be severe.
For instance, lying on one's college application can result in your degree being rescinded... yes, even years later.
Lying on one's mortgage application can result in you being shut-out of every mortgage provider (government, private, etc.) from now until the end of time.
Lying on one's welfare... oh, excuse me, "Temporary Aid For Needy Families," application can not only shut you out of ever receiving any form of public aid again, but land you in jail.
Whatever benefit you think there might be to lying about your marital status... I assure you, it's not worth it.

Yes if you don't tell them its fraud, you could serve jail time and pay a fine as well as pay back all the money you got. The other thing is they could ban you from ever receiving federal financial aid again. They can find out because its all the government, so your w-2's , taxes filed - its all reported to the government and cross-referenced. You can really mess up your life by lying. Tell the truth and you don't have any worries.

Yes!!!!! You must tell them, it is a legal document and not telling them is fraud. The worst that can happen is you will go to jail, the best is that they will make you repay all monies that they gave you. Don't do it, anyway, usually married people get more financial aid then single.

If being married disqualifies you for the financial aid you're seeking, and you lie and tell them you're not married, you're committing fraud. You could possibly end arrested and in jail.
Yeh, I'd say telling the truth would be important in this case.

Well, it depends.
When I filed for financial aid I wasnt married but 3 days later I was. That form says at the time you fill out this form are you married and at that time I wasnt. (fafsa form)
Ask your school financial Aid Rep. Dont tell her anything specific just ask her as if you were curious.

Correct me if I'm wrong... but I was under the impression you got more aid for being married. It shows there is someone financially dependant on you.
I would look into that before you go screwing yourself out of extra money by lieing!

If they find out, you could get in some trouble...They would probably cut off your financial aid (BIG PROBLEM THERE) and they may fine you.....it is important, but it just depends on your ethics, and values whether or not you keep it a secret.

I think you should tell the truth at all times. It helps to protect your integrity. Above all when you lie on anything with regards to finance, when caught it is embarrassing and your are made out to be a criminal.

I don't see how they would find out unless you tell them. But the reason they ask if your married is to determine whether or not your income together will qualify you for financial aid or not.

If you lie, there can be negative repercussion when they discover you've lied (and they will)...your marriage status is on your tax returns, correct?
Best to be honest and then you've nothing to worry about...
...or do you want them giving you money, then asking for all of it back NOW, after you've already spent it?
