You have my sympathy. I wish I knew the answer, but I think it is a decision that has to be made by the person who is struggling with the problem. My oldest daughter is going through the same thing and I am in despair because our family has tried to help her so much, but nothing seems to work for very long. Good luck.

Permanent depends on your brother in laws willingness to co operate fully with his physician.
There are medications that can be prescribed and along with going to AA .

Family support plays a hugh role in helping him succeed with this.

there is no "magic pill" for alcholism. I would suggest you find a alanon group in your area. alanon is a support group for those with family members dealing with addiction. These groups can help you help him. For your brother in law, he needs to come to terms with his problems him self before he can take more steps to recovery

there's only one remedy, and the answer is "him". He has to want to change, no matter what you guys do, if he does not want to change, then everything is hopeless. Try to encourage him, tell him you care and love him and don''t want to see he's live go down hill. If he hurts you guys/does stupid things tell him when he's not drunk, so he knows the damage he's doing to you guys, and most important him self. be there for him.
