I believe it is the latter too, and I am a liberal. The American public is always going to be split in it's political beliefs. The parties just take advantage of the weaknesses of the other party.

Many Americans voted AGAINST the Republicans last year rather than for anyone. It was a message that was sent to Bush and the Republican Congress that many Americans were displeased with Iraq and all the scandals the Republicans were having. Many of the newly elected Democrats come from conservative districts and were elected as conservatives and moderates even though in the early Congress many have sided with the far left.

closer to the latter. a careful study of the individual races shows that. don't forget that the same leftist mainstream media that spins the news to make it seem as though the 2006 election was some huge national referendum for nancy pelosi craziness, didn't think that algore not being able to carry tennesee or arkansas in 2000 meant anything at all

The House of Representative were under Democrat control, for what, 30 years. Senate was under their control for, what, 20 years. The public no more endorsed liberalism after the last election than they embraced conservativism in 1994 when Newt Gingrich and company won the House in a landslide.

Actually a lot of the democrats that were voted in were conservative democrats. So then that means that people were just voting against the war. The funny and tragic thing is that now the war might be mishandled in a much worse way because people voted Democrat. I mean has anyone heard of the stab our troops in the back bill that congress tried to pass.

I think most Americans are a mixed bag - they want fiscal responsibility, but don't dare touch their handouts. They are mostly socially liberal, but don't want gays in their faces. They are sick to death of the war, but not with war per se; they are sick of the incompetent way it has been handled, but they would love to see OBL hanging from a gibbet. They want the illegals out, no amnesty ever, and in the ultimate irony, we're united on that and both parties are screwing us over on that one. The breakdown of civil society is obvious, even liberals are seeing it now, but there are a million competing fixes. I don't think the Congress swing Dem is a sign of a liberal swing, rather more disgust with the neocons.

Whoo, it is humorous. My total existence i've got seen liberals tell me what i ought to do to stay my existence. If any political philosophy looks down on human beings it is Liberalism. Why do you think of we live in a nanny state? If human beings have been extremely asserting adequate with conservatism why does no longer the Congress be chock crammed with dems? The "majority" they have is razor skinny, my chum, as much as you desire to no longer see that.

well, call it what you will..as an independent who determined these past elections, it had everything to do with the HANDLING of the war, and not the process of war itself. Usually if you are a president who went to war, you are pretty popular. But either way, the 28% that still supoort this admin are called republicans, and there is probably an equal number of democrats. The rest of us are in the middle, and will contyinue to vote the issues, and not the ideals.

Neither, it is a common occurrence in the US that if the President and congress have both been controlled by the same party for 6 years strait, congress will shift to the other party in the mid-term election of the second presidency.

War weariness & angst. I think a majority of Americans are conservative in their core beliefs despite all the brainwashing by the mainstream media.
