I can only speak for myself. Here's what is important to me:
1. He treats me well and makes me feel appreciated and cared for. He is loyal and faithful to me. He makes time for me.
2. He is intelligent, has a good sense of humor, and is kind and compassionate to others. He is good to his family and his friends.
3. He is ambitious. His life has direction. He knows what he wants. He either has a profession or is taking proactive steps to acheiving one.
4. He is physically healthy. I find him attractive (does not have to be great looking). We are sexually compatible.
5. He can deal with my obsession for Yahoo! Answers. :-)

Kindness and a gentle heart first. I've seen the hottest guys in the world without these and they seemed grotesque to me because of it. These are the two I prefer first, then humor, then physical attraction, yes it's okay to desire the inside AND the outside. Go for the girl who will desire the inside qualities first then consider the outside ones.
Also as a christian, I desire a man after God's own heart.

They prefer a man who doesn't generalize about women by asking utterly subjective questions as if the answer is the same for 'most women' asked.

I want a lot. :)
My man needs to possess an intelligent sense of humor (i.e. more than bar jokes and slapstick), and is respectful and trustworthy, honest, masculine but not macho, responsible, and faithful.
I think it's fair to say that most women would want their man to have these traits.

A sense of humor lit by a wit that takes a bit of smarts. Compassion for others. Will be there no matter way (I had breast cancer).
