I was just wondering when you should have to get a new gas can... like after so many years? My gas can still looks okay but I keep hearing things about safety and the planet and I just want to stay on the safe side. When you no longer want your gas can, can you just throw it away or does it have to be recycled? Help! =)

I switched to plastic gas containers 5 years ago and have only had to replace when the plastic flex spout gets a hole. The old metal cans rusted inside and contaminated the gas. When you decide to throw one away, let the remnants of gas dry out, then rinse and throw in the trash.

If you don't want your can and it has no gas it it, open it and let the fumes escape and toss it in the trash.
If you want to keep it and use it again, check the bottom inside to see if it shines in the sun and there is no rust, if its clean and shiny and you don't want to use it ,but keep it, place a few ounces of oil in the btm and it won't rust.
If its a rusty can, toss it!
