Sounds like a:
Mexican Rosa Boa
Indian Python
Red Cylinder snake
Tropical ratsnake
Green whip snake
Ring-neck snake
Laotian wolf snake
Masked water snake
Mangrove snake
Boomslang
Amazon false ferdelance
Banded kait
Black-tailed rattlesnake
Wagler's palm viper

There may be more that fit the description. It would narrow the search if you can give the location of the snake.

LOL. That describes several kinds of snakes. Most of them are nonpoisonous. It's probably a king snake or a corn snake. Edit: Even a non-poisonous snake can inflict a painful bite. Don't annoy the snake.

It could be a Speckled Kingsnake, native to Louisiana. It could also be a Black Kingsnake, found in Indiana and the Wabash Valley.
